Novel of the Week : Messenger’s Angel by Heather Killough-Walden

I really liked the first book of  the "Lost  Angels" saga, so I couldn't not read Messenger’s Angel by Heather Killough-Walden. I wanted to know what happends next so here's the plot :

Today's Obsession : Peter Pan collar

To be true, this is a 2012's trend, but I'm so glad that the "collar" resisted trough the summer and appeared again this autumn. It gives a vintage and classic touch to the outifit and I absolut adore it!
It can ba on a dress and/or shirt or it could be an accesory like collar necklaces...

Here's who celebrities and fashion bloggers/it girls work it!

Movie Review : Now is Good

Now is Good (2012) by Ol Parker. With Dakota Fanning, Josef Altin, Jeremy Irvine, Kaya Scodelario and Paddy Considine.

It starts being an habit the fact that I watch the movie before reading the book it's based on...It happened with "The Host" based on Stephenie Meyer's book, and thank God, I've seen it before the book...If I hadn't, I wouldn't understand anything of the book!!

And now it happened again with "Now is Good" based on "Before I Die" by Jenny Downham.

Here's the story:

Tessa is a 16 years old English girl. She has leukemia and take the brave decision of stop taking medicines because the cancer is at an advanced stage and can't be cure. Her mum left years before so Tessa lives with her dad and her little brother, who have difficulties in understanding Tessa's decision.

When the doctor suggest her to do "as much as you can, as fast as you can" Tessa comes up with a 'bucket list', a list of things to do before she dies.

Her best friend Zoey is very supportive and excited about doing some things of the list together with her friend, such as doing drung, steal from a store and stuff like this. While burning some clothes and photos of her life before cancer, Tessa meets her new neighbour, Adam. He moved lately with his mother and he's taking care of her after his dad dies.

They start to know each other and Tessa thinks that Adam could help her realize one thing of the list : falling in love. In the meantime, Tessa start to get worse and spent one of her last days where she's strong enough with Zoey, who's pregnant.

Adam wants to stay and take care of Tessa, but at first he gets scared of this kind of sickness and Tessa's parents suggest him to leave, but he keeps to come back.

Unfortunately for the one of us who hopes for the happy ending, but luckly for Tessa, the movie ends up with her death.

While I'm not Dakota Fanning's fan (it's not that I don't like her, I'm just not impressed by her acting skills) I loved Jeremy Irvines and Paddy Considine's performances.
This movie is a touching example of how strong sick kids are and what change in a family when a child has cancer.

Movie Review : My Week with Marilyn

My week with Marilyn (2011) by Simon Curtis. With Michelle Williams, Eddie Redmayne, Kenneth Branagh, Julia Ormond and Judy Dench.
My Week With Marilyn Movie Poster
I have to admit that I'm more on "team" Audrey Hepburn than "team" Marilyn Monroe and that I've only saw one movie of her: "The Seven Year Itch". To be honest...I don't even remember how I got to see My week with Marilyn in the movie teathre in the first place!! But I'm glad I did...

Here's the plot (SPOILER ALLEART) :

Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne) after his University graduation decides that he doesn't want to follow his intellectual father or brother's footsteps and moves to London looking for a job. After being rejected almost everywhere, he ends up asking for a spot in Laurence Olivier's (Kenneth Branagh) next production. He waits in his office until Olivier and his wife Vivien show up and he gets the job in the upcoming movie The Prince and the Showgirl, starring Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams). Colin's first task is to find a place nearby the shooting area for Marilyn Monroe and her husband, author Arthur Miller to stay while they're in England. The press eventually finds out about the house, but Colin reveals he secured a second house (just in case) impressing both Olivier and Marilyn's publicist.
My Week With Marilyn
Finally Marilyn arrives with Arthur in England and everybody in the production is excited. The first day (and from that day on) Marilyn reveals to be not like the bubbly blonde girl everyone thought she was, but an actress with many insecurities on her acting skills, which is way she brings her acting coach always with her. The shooting program delays because of Marilyn moods...she arrives late and forgets her lines....during this harsh moment, she and Colin start to get to know each other. Colin gets to know another actress as well, Lady Sybil Thorndike (Judy Dench), who's very kind with him. He also meet Lucy (Emma Watson) wardrobe assistant whom he is attracted to, and they go on a date.

Michelle Williams and Eddie Redmayne in My Week with Marilyn (2011)

After a few, Arthur Miller has to go back to the States and Marilyn has a break down, due to an Arthur's notebook, which contains the plot of a new play that appears to poke fun at her. Thankfully, Colin is able to console her and they start to spent together as much time as possible. Once, they are given a tour of Windsor Castle by Owen
Morshead, Colin's godfather. He also shows Marilyn around Eton College then they go skinny dipping in the River Thames. Marilyn kisses Colin.

One night, Marilyn locks herself in her room and Colin is the only one who can get and Marilyn invites him to lie next to her on the bed. Colin think that she's going to leave Arthur and stay with him, but Marilyn has a fickle mood and the next day says that she loves no one else, but Arthur.
Colin's a little heart broken, but at the end of the last day of shooting she goes to his B&B to thank him for his precious help.
I didn't read any reviews about this movie before seeing it so I didn't know what to expect. I found it a very cute and well acted movie. I have to say, Michelle Williams is PERFECT for the role and was believable.

Today's Obession : Marion Cotillard's Red Carpet Style

Marion Cotillard is a very talented (not to mention her innate beauty) French actress.                                               Back in 2007, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for portraying French singer Edith Piaf in the biopic "La vie en Rose"...My modest opinion? Amazing movie!

She has a very elegant and classic style. Almost always she wears French designers, above all Christian Dior. What I like about her style is that she often wears "there-but-not-there" make up and, besides important events such as the Oscar, her dresses and clothes are very linear and simple.

Here's my playlist of her most memorable looks.

Movie Review : Paris-Manhattan

Paris-Manhattan (2012) by  Sophie Lellouche. With  Alice TaglioniPatrick BruelMarine  and Delterme Louis-Do de Lencquesaing.

Alice Ovitz is a pharmacist in Paris and she has always been the "outsider" in her family, while her sister Hélène is the perfect daughter. During her early years was introduced to and fell in love with Woody Allen's films.

On night she and her sister are at a party and Alice meets Pierre. As they are about to go out to get some fresh air, Alice' sister  walks by and Pierre falls in love instantly withe her. At first, Alice's pissed but eventually she calms down...

On Alice's bedroom wall hangs a huge poster of Woody Allen, with whom she has long night conversations, and he talks back to her through excerpts of dialogue from his films.

Ten years go by. Alice has taken over her father's pharmacy after he retired, her sister is long married toPierre and the poster still hangs over the bed.
Alice's father keeps stealing her business cards in order to find her an husband and gives them to every man he meets. One night, at a party he meets Victor. He builds security systems that are so imaginative and wierd, but they work. So Alice's father hires him for building a security sistem for the pharmacy. As the time goes he and Alice start to know each other, but it's not love at first sight at all!
They have some ups and downs while there are some events that came across....

After a fight with Alice, Victor is called from an hotel where a guest is trapped in his room. The door won't open, but Victor is able to fix it. And the guest happens to be no one else but WOODY ALLEN! He's late for his flight, but Victor convinces him to stay a little more in order to meet Alice. He calls her, but she arrives late...Victor gets mad with her, but Alice surprises him, kissing him. In the mean time Woody Allen gets back to the hotel, sees the couple and tell her that she's a lucky woman, Victor is a great guy!

I didn't like too much Alice's character...she's too tough and uncompromising. For her it's only black or white....But I enjoyed this movie so much...maybe because I'm a pharmacist-to-be and I love Allen's movie like the protagonist does, maybe because it's set in Paris. It's carefree,

Get Her Look - Alexis Bledel

When I saw the promo pics of her latest movie "Remember Sunday" I immediately thougth "I NEED that dress!". After a not so long research, I've discovered that the mentioned dress was "Pins and Needles" by Urban Outfitters...I was shocked, it doesn't seem like U.O' style. I checked the web site and, OF COURSE!, it was already sold.

Luckly for me, I've found a few dress who aren't identical, but anyway are amazing and affordable as the one from U.O was.

24 hours in Verona

You may know Verona as “the city of Romeo and Juliet” from Shakespeare’s drama…indeed one of the most turistic places is Juliet's House (with its famous Balcony) in via Cappello, but the beauty of the city isn’t just there. I start by saying that everything in Verona is beautiful  and, even when it’s raining, it’s like being in an Impressionist’s paint…

If you’re visiting Verona just for one day here’s my advises on what you can do and see…

Piazza Bra, near the Arena
When you think of Paris the first monument that comes through your mind is the Eiffel Tower and the same happens with London's Big Ben...When it comes to Verona, the symbol monument  is the Arena. During summertime, the lyric season takes place in it as well as some concerts during the rest of the year. There’s the chance to visit the inside with a guide tour, but it’s also beautiful only the outside.

entering Verona centre
Nearby the Arena, there’s the most important and crowed street of all Verona, via Mazzini. It’s the shopping street, there are the fast fashion shops like Berska and Zara but also Max&Co., Intimissimi, 1st Class  Alviero Martini ecc.

At the end of via Mazzini you can go left and find Piazza delle Erbe,  a very charming square surrounded by cafès. If you decide to go right there’s Juliet’s house with the famous balcony.

Juliet's Balcony and House
Piazza Erbe view from Torre dei Lamberti, another turistic spot
Ponte Pietra
Verona is crossed by the river  Adige and there’re 15 brigdes that connect the two sides of the city. Two of them are Ponte Pietra (literally, Stone Bridge) and ponte di Castelvecchio. There’re actually nothing to see on those bridges but they are very picturesque and you can see some beautiful spots of other parts of Verona.

My favourite monument in Verona is the Roman Theatre. It's an open air theatre made of huge concentric stone steps. The theatre is near the hill so these steps are inclined. I like it because, every summer, take place the representations of Shakespeare’s dramas. From the theatre there is a stairway that goes up to the hill and by night the view is breathtaking!!
On Verona’s hills there’s the Sanctuary dedicated to Holy Mother of Lourdes, where you can also enjoy a magnifique view as well as pray in it.
On the hills, there's the  Sanctuary!
Even if it's better to visit a city during spring or summer, when the weather supposed to be good, I can assure you that Verona is beautiful anyway. During autumn and winter there are a lot of event, like Verona's traditional street games (Tocatì) and painting exhibitions.

Song of the Day : Fireflies by Owl City

A special “thank you” is own to my kind and talented friend Giulia Nicoli. The photos in this post (except Juliette’s balcony) were realized by her. How fantastic are they?? Grazie Giulia!

Novel of the Week - Pomp and Circumstance by Noël Coward

English cover
Italian cover

I’ve already told you how I choose books when I’m in a library…I read the title and look at the cover, if I like it, I buy the novel, sometimes even without reading the plot. Here in Italy, the translation of Pomp and Circumstance by Sir Noël Coward has been translated as “The Queen’s Journey” so I grabbed it….Once I was at home I discovered that the plot was a bit different of what I thought…

Here it is!

Today's Obsession : Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is the month for breast cancer's prevention and information.

There're a lot of initiatives here in Italy for promoting prevention for women and designers and fashion names are not standing there doing nothing.

A few years ago, Swarovski promoted a line inspired by the sadly famous "pink ribbon" doing charms, pins, necklaces and even pens.
Part of the proceeds have been donated for research.

This year, Cruciani has a special version of his famous crochet bracelet. It's a version with pink ribbons, it costs 10 euro and part of it will be devolved.
I think it's very nice, but it's not the only one...

Down below, I'll put some links to website where you can find bracelets, earrings and rings all breast cancer themed.

Here's a nail art tutorial inspired by the pink ribbon
