📺 Korean Tv Series Review: ID: Gangnam Beauty (내 아이디는 강남미인)

I started watching this series completely by chance as I'm not a fan of students dramas, but as soon as I began episode 1 I knew I'd stick 'till the end!
Just listen to its soundtrack: one of the best I've heard so far!
Kang Mi Rae has been bullied on all her life and it reached the worst point in middle school so, before entering Korea's top University, she undergoes surgery on the entire face, with her mom and best friend supporting her all the way. Even if she suffered such a painful experience, she hasn't lost her caring and positive attitude.
It's not like she's asking for the moon: everything Mi Rae wants is a normal life as University students, but she'll have to face people's prejudices on plastic surgery and gossips about how she was before that...but thankfully she finds herself a group of friends who genuinely like her for who she is.

As often is, world's a small place and Mi Rae will met again Do Kyung Seok, the most popular boy back in middle school.
seems like fathers are protective/jealous anywhere in the world...
Do Kyung Seok is Mi Rae's exact opposite: taciturn, apperently indifferent to everything, especially in people gossiping about his beauty...at first he's not sure whether the Mi Rae he knew is the one he meets at the freshmen party, but will end eventually protecting her every way he can, especially from Hyun Soo A
Considered the most beautiful girl in University, Hyun Soo A immediately wants to be friends with Mi Rae, but her behaviours and comments are ambiguous and shady...

My Opinion👍👎
Kang Mi Rae, is a fantastic lead female character because she may look like a fearful duckling, when in reality is a strong girl who will not let people make her feel like she's some sort of class B human.
She's very intuitive and recognizes very quickly who's not sincere with her...she's a little less intuitive when it comes to understand when a guy is interested in her, but still...

Other parallel stories will intersecate with the protagonist struggles to achieve a normal life: we'll get to understand what's behind Hyun Soo A double-face behaviours and all sort of appearance related issues, like boys keeping relationships hidden because of the girl's aspects, sexism and so on...

According to stats, one of the top countries with the highest rate of plastic surgeries intervents is South Korea and, given how famous are their skin products and cosmetics, I'd say it was about time they did a drama regarding this topic...whether you're pro or against plastic surgery, my advise is to watch this series anyway, to understand the various range of reasons why people decide undergo it.
This drama is downright a beautiful one, full of inspiring/reflection points and interesting characters.

To conclude on a lighter note: Not even the Grim Reaper in Goblin had such a dark monochromatic wardrobe as Do Kyung Seok, whom mostly wears black! I'm used to pastel and multicolored outfits like in this drama so I was a little surprised...

Ranking: 4/5
