One thing I kept doing the whole of 2018 and that filled most of my weekday nights has been watching Korean Dramas. I started with Master's Sun back in November 2017 and currently, I'm watching The Last Empress, Cleaning with Passion for Now and Bad Guys.
I wanted to share why I kept watching K-Dramas and the things I've learned in one year from them...and no, Korean is not one of those things!
WHAT I've learned about Korean Dramas?
- The 'black baseball cap + black mask' combo can either mean that A) the one wearing this has been wrongly accused of something and he/she is on the run. B) the one(s) wearing this are the bad guys and are probably up to no good...Either way, it's not for fashion and surely they don't need the mask for health reasons.
- Talking Crickets: commonly known as best friends/siblings, they bare the cross of talking sense into the protagonist's brain, bringing them down to Earth and it's not unusual for him/her to be even more interesting and amusing than the protagonist.
- If the protagonist is rich, the car is Italian...or European. Just watch 'What's Wrong with Secretary Kim?' and you'll understand.
- It doesn't matter if she's 16 or 60, the lead female will always have at least one stuffed animal in her bedroom, or she will receive it during the series.
- Two scenarios explain the very odd relationship between Koreans and beverages: A) the characters are in a bar, with drinks in front of them and 99% of the time they'll leave WITHOUT TOUCHING A SINGLE DROP! B) a K-Drama isn't complete without the kiosk scene: usually by night, the characters meet in a kiosk for sharing their struggles and problems over some street food and the unmissable green bottle of soju! Apparently is very bitter...
- The (piggyback) ride home: given to the female lead because either drank or hurt. To add drama, it’s often given at night. While raining.
- Mothers' mentality stopped at "Pride & Prejudice" because the only thing they want is their children to get married. FAST. And they’ll never approve the partner at the first try.
- The answer to the question "What do you want to eat?" will always be "something yummy"...since they have to point it out, I do have serious doubts about Korean food's deliciousness.
WHY I kept watching KDramas?
After the first series, I kept watching K-Dramas because it’s always interesting to see different cultures and how people deal
with universal topics like love and work. Korean society (as portrayed in these
series) has some similarities as well: corruption, sexism, and nepotism, but in the end, they also have positive messages of hope, bravery, unmasked lies, girls stepping out of the "damsel in distress" stereotype and my personal favorite: karma working its magic!!Soundtracks also play a huge part in making you addicted to a series: "Descendants of the Sun" and "ID: Gangnam Beauty" are just examples.
Of course, you'll feel a little lost if the series is exceptional...I'm still mourning 'Why Secretary Kim?' and it ended in July!, but you can't always get what you want!
I'm so excited about the new Dramas scheduled for 2019, what about you?
What's on your 'to watch' list?
