📺 Japanese Tv Series Review: And, Live (そして、生きる)

This story develops between 2011 and 2019 and follows the lives chronicles of Ikuta Toko and Shimuzu Kiyotaka.
The first is a kind young girl from Morioka who dreams to become an actress but is scared about possible rejections. The latter is a young man who's still doubtful about what he wants to achieve in his life, with much of his mother's concern.

The two meet in Kesennuma while volunteering after the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that devastated that area of Japan, in March 2011. Since they're very much alike, the quickly befriend and it's obvious they developed feelings for each other, but they'll come clean about them after more than one year.

Life, however, happens and the two loose touch and while Toko stays in her hometown, working as a waitress with her Korean friend Han Yuri, Kiyotaka follows his wish to be helpful and gets a job in a no-profit organization and starts working in the Philipines.

After surviving a terroristic attack in Manila, Kiyotaka goes back to Japan but he's not the serene and happy person he once was: he has violent panic attacks caused by his PTSD and ends up living with Han Yuri, whom he met by coincidence.

Koto moved on as well and is in a relationship with Kubo Shinji, an old schoolmate who truly loves her and wants to make her happy.

But then again life, mixed with the decisions these characters make, will lead them to one another once more, provoking different feelings and reactions.

My Opinion👍👎
I'm not gonna lie, this 6 episodes series was tough to watch...probably because the events and situations portrayed are likely to happen in real life as well.
There's no sugar coat whatsoever and even if hard times await for the protagonists, their strength and will to find happiness is admirable as well as their flaws and weaknesses.

On a 'learning Japanese' level, I found it very good for both formal and informal Japanese and it was easy to understand the basic conversations even for a beginner like me.

It was much different from what I had imagined and nothing went as I hoped or guessed so I would definitely suggest the view to those who don't like predictable stories nor the happy ending at all costs.

FUN FACT: the actor playing Shimuzu Kiyotaka is the same who portrayed the dreamer and clumsy protagonist of that amazing movie that is Color Me True (今夜、ロマンス劇場で)

Ranking: 4/5
