Japan, 1960
Kenji Makino is a shy and goofy assistant director and almost every evening he goes to the local movie theatre "Romance Theater" and watches a very old, black & white movie about a rebellious princess and her journey with unprobable animal friends.
However, one night, the theatre owner tells Kenjii he's going to sell the film to a collector, so that is going to be his last time seeing the movie. At some point, a major black out occur and when the lights are back on...Princess Miyuki is in the room!!
She's very aware of the fact that she's a movie heroine, but that doesn't stop her to wanting to know more about Kenjii's world, which she finds more colourful and exciting compared to hers, so she decides to stay.
Kejii of course is thrilled the girl he's in love with will stay, but she proves to be quite a character: she's bossy and a bit of a tomboy, does as pleased and treats Kenjii as her personal servant, but somehow they grow closer as days pass...until when she can't hide the secret condition of her staying in this world.
My Opinion👍👎
This movie reminded me a lot of 'Nuovo Cinema Paradiso' because of the similar nostalgic atmospheres and great scenographies. If you also love the romantic/fantasy element, then you need to watch this movie!
I would say that it is as romantic as 'The Notebook', but it's much funnier and moving. The finale is an happy one and left me feeling uplifted because of it.
I have nothing but positive things to say about it and it shows on my final vote as well...There is just one other movie I've rated this much on this blog (A Monster Call), this should give you an hit on how good Color Me True is!
