🎬 Movie Review: Our Little Sister (海街diary)

Umimachi Diary Movie Poster
Sachi, Yoshino e Chika are three sisters living together in Kamakura. Their characters are very different from each other, with Sachi being more mature and mother-like (since she's the oldest) while Yoshino and Chika are still more carefree. Their father left them and their mother a long time ago and their mom as well moved to Hokkaido, so it's just three of them in a big, traditional Japanese house.

When they heard the news of their dad passing, Yoshino and Chika want to attend the funeral, while Sachi uses her night shift at work as an excuse not to. Being the oldest means she remembers more about their father and she's still angry with him...

Once at the funeral, Yoshino and Chika discover they have a teenage step-sister, Suzu. She's extremely shy and polite and once Sachi meets her as well, she asks her if she'd like to go to Kamakura and live with them. The young girl accepts almost immediately and soon she moves in.

Living together with other people is always a challenge, sometimes even more if they are your siblings and the story revolves around this as well as the personal issue (work and love related) each of these girls has...

My Opinion👍👎
This movie premiered the first time during the 2015 edition of the Cannes Film Festival, nothing less! The pace is slow and calm, it spans through an entire year and so the viewer can appreciate the evolution of the girls' relationship. I really like how sisterhood was portrayed, in the most realistic identifiable way possible, at its fullest, both in good and bad times.

This coming of age story is about getting to really know oneself and how it doesn't matter what parents did, their fault shouldn't fall on their children's shoulders.
But mostly is about forgiveness, the most difficult thing a person can do. I know this 'analysis' could make the movie sound boring or sad, but it's the other way around since it has a positive perspective towards the future and is sentimental without being overly melancholic.

It takes place in Kamakura and at some point, the sisters spend the day in the beach area of Enoshima, which is one of my favorite places in Japan so I almost jumped when I recognized the spot!

So I feel confident when I say that, even if you're doubtful and it doesn't seem like your usual pick, it's surely worth watching.
