📖 Novel of the Week: As Old As Time (Twisted Tales #3) by Liz Braswell

28450966
The story starts exactly like we know it in the Disney's movie, with Belle feeling like an outcast in the small and closed-minded village she and her father live in, while a spoiled little prince has been turned into a beast over a decade ago.

It entwines with Belle's parents' one: a young Maurice gets married to beautiful and powerful Rosalind, a charmante, the French equivalent of a white witch. Cohabitation between les charmantes and those without powers is difficult but possible until a plague spreads in the kingdom and one by one those with powers mysteriously vanish without a valid explanation.

Rosalind seeks for the king and queen's help but is turned away. Eventually, they'll die from the plague and the day before his coronation, she visits the young prince. He's as spoiled and selfish like his parents so she punishes him with the famous curse we all know.
In the meantime, Rosalind and Maurice had a daughter: Belle.

The real story starts when grown-up Belle brings back the Beast to the castle after she runs away and he saves her from a wolves pack: the day after, the Beast shows her the library and they'll find out about the existence of les charmantes and they'll try to find the reason why a curse was cast to make the entire kingdom forget about them.

👍👎My Thoughts
I liked that the author kept Belle's character unmodified, as a matter of fact, I felt she was even more opinionated and strong-minded than portrayed in the movies.

Belle has never been one of my favorite Disney Princesses, for no particular reason really, simply I was drawn to other princesses; anyway, I think this book is beautifully written, is very original thanks to the addition of Belle's parents' story and I think the ending fits perfectly with the entire story.
Divided into 3 books, the last one is the darkest of them all, revolving around a very serious topic (the purity of the race) which has been described in a linear and flowy way.

My final vote is this low because, even if I appreciated its originality, it failed to engage me completely, but if you like 'The Beauty and the Beast' this is a retelling worth reading.
