🎬 Movie Review: Kiss Me at the Stroke of Midnight (午前0時、キスしに来てよ)

Hinana Hanazawa has her days meticulously planned which can be summed like this: taking care of her younger sister and study. She does nothing else and everyone in school knows her as a diligent person.
Both her parents are busy with their restaurant so she has to behave that way, but deep down she dreams of a fairytale-like romance.

One day, her school becomes the set of a movie, starring the hottest and most popular young actor of the momentKaede Ayase.

After meeting by coincidence a couple of times, the two start to hang out together, but their personalities are completely opposite: Hinana's naive, shy, and always ends up misunderstanding Kaede's intentions.
On the other side, Kaede looks like the carefree kind of guy (with a peculiar hobby) but as the two begin to get close Hinana learns that there's much more under his pretty smile...

My Opinion👍👎
I decided I wanted to watch this movie as soon as I saw the teaser trailer, not because of a particular reason but the impression I got was of a fresh and 'not so much demanding' kind of story.
And that's exactly what this movie is: there's no unpredictability, a linear storyline with no plot twist and where the viewer knows how it is going to end...why watch it, then?
Because it's funny and it actually makes you reflect on people's habit to stop at first impressions and on the fact that what you see isn't necessarily what it is.

Like any school rom-com, any kind of misunderstanding could have been solved just by talking about it, without beating around the bush, or by being honest from the start, but that's too easy and, frankly, not as interesting as seeing how characters react in different situations.

Hinana has two best friends who are a boy and a girl. The latter is the funniest among the trio and gives her the best advice while sounding harsh and sarcastic...gotta love someone with this ability!
As far as watching this movie for learning Japanese, you get a distinct separation between formal/ kind and casual speech and that's useful for the listening part. You also get a wide range of adjectives and phrases to learn how to share your feelings and emotions.

Rating: 2½/5

It DOES NOT pass the Bechdel-Wallace test
1. There must be at least two women (and the names must be known) ✔
2. The women have to talk to each other
3. The topic of conversation can be about anything except men
