Aristocrat teenager Audrey Rose Wadsworth isn't like the girls her age: to tea dates and daydreaming about her future husband she prefers a scalpel and uncovering the mysteries behind someone else's death.
She's been studying the basics of forensic medicine under her uncle's supervision (and against her father's will) for a while now and she's good at both examination corpses and deducing how they died.
When East London starts to be hunted by a series of horrendous murders, Audrey Rose will form an unexpected alliance with her uncle's other protege, Thomas Cresswell, a young man both skilled and arrogant, with the apparent sole mission on being on Audrey Rose's nerves, but that will prove himself loyal and trustworthy.
The more the duo investigate on the infamous Jack the Ripper's murders, the more they put their lives in danger and Audrey Rose's certainties about who she can trust and who not get thinner and thinner...
👍👎My Thoughts
Victorian London is one of my favorite settings as it was a period of incredible discoveries yet filled with superstition and religious fears.
What drew me to this book, which I later found out it's the 1st of a series of 4 novels, was obviously the 'clickbait' title and the fact that we have a female lead, high-born Audrey Rose, who's not willing to sit home to wait for a suitable suitor, all the contrary! She's intelligent. brave and once she sets her mind on solving the Ripper's murders nothing is going to stop her.
I loved the gothic (almost steampunk) sceneries and the detailed descriptions of East London's dark alleys and businesses. Plus, all the characters are well developed, and even if there are tons of them, the storyline doesn't get messy nor the reader loses track of the events.
It was captivating enough for me to want to keep on reading the sequels, it would be my first series in a while...let's hope it will stay this good!
