📖 Novel of the Week: A Greyhound of a Girl by Roddy Doyle

Mary O’Hara is a 12 years old Dubliner and, on the surface, she seems to have no bigger problems rather than her BFF moving in another part of the city... the reality is, her beloved Granny has been hospitalized for a while and doesn't show signs of improvements.
One day, on her way back from school, Mary makes the strangest encounter ever: weirdly dressed young lady, with a very old fashioned name (Tansey), asks Mary to deliver a message to her Granny, claiming she'll understand.

Tansey turns out to be Granny's late mother's ghost and she's here to help her daughter with her last days on Earth. But they won't leave before one last trip to Granny's and her mother's old house down in Gorey, County Wexford...

So Mary, her mom Scarlett, Granny Emer and great granny's ghost jump into the car for a night road trip back home and in time!

"Imagine. My mother stole an ice cream for me!"
"I didn't steal it, Emer." said Tansey
"Ah, but it's the thought that counts." said Emer.

👍👎My Thoughts
My initial thought on this book was of a children/pre-teen kind of story, but I changed my mind as soon as page 1...
4 generations of women are brought together for the most surrealistic, unbelievable trip ever and the result is not a comedy/ghost story, but a travel through time that mixes sad and funny memories to Ireland's past and present.

My vote: 7¾ /10
