📺 Korean Tv Series Review: Navillera (나빌레라)

After a life of hard work and struggles, Sim Deok-cheol has finally retired and is living his days as the average 70 years old man. Sure he's attending more funerals and nursing houses than he'd liked, he has a loud and sometimes quarrelsome family and the real boss in the house is clearly his wife Hea-Nam, but he's not unhappy with how his life turned out.

One day, by chance, he stumbles into a little dancing studio and sees a young man dancing and making all sorts of pirouettes and jumps. Moved by the beauty of those movements when asked by the young man what he was doing there, Deok-cheol has no hesitation and claims he wants to learn ballet, his longtime dream ever since he was a child.

Lee Chae-rok is 23 years old and started ballet only a handful of years before but he's talented and stubborn enough to be already at a good level and his wish to join a ballet company makes him practice endlessly and without caring about his injured knee.

When Chae-rok finds the old man peering in during his practice, he's a bit annoyed and asks him harshly to leave. But the old man is persistent and after hearing that he wants to learn ballet, Mr. Ki (Chae-rok's teacher) decides that he'll teach Deok-cheol only if he'll be able to stay on his tiptoes for 1 minute and gives him a week to prepare.
With a lot of practice, Deok-cheol succeeds and Mr.Ki decides that Chae-rok will be his ballet instructor and that, on the other hand, the old man will become the young ballerino's manager to keep an eye on him.

Initially against the whole idea, Chae-rok will eventually soften up after he seems with how much passion and constancy the old man comes to the practice studio.
Chae-rok is bullied by a former football teammate who blames Chae-rok's father for ruining his career and, besides his ballet teacher, Chae-rok doesn't have an adult figure in his life so Deok-cheol will end up helping him more than it was initially thought.

My Opinion👍
What we have here is a serious contestant for the title of 'Best K-drama of 2021' if you ask me. The plot is moving and I shred far more tears than expected but I loved every single episode as they all teach how to persist to life's difficulties and curveballs with an optimistic mindset.

Deok-cheol might pass as weak and submissive to his family at first, but with his good character and open smile, he's able to convince everyone that it's never too late to fulfill your dreams, even if they might seem odd and unachievable.

Every character is hurting because of their own reasons, which makes them somewhat relatable but what I liked most was that they all find in themselves the strength to keep going on.
Chae-rok's only friend Se-Jong is such a funny yet rational character and I liked how he seemed to understand him when even Chae-rok was unsure of his own actions.

This drama is a beautiful portrait of one unexpected yet heartwarming friendship between two very different people who would have never crossed paths if it wasn't for their common passion so it feels like they were destined to meet.
I'm still recovering from all the emotions of the last two episodes and my only suggestion if you start watching it is to keep a box of tissues at hand's reach.

Rating: 5/5
