👘 [Japanese Week] 📺 Japanese Tv Series Review: Three Star Bar in Nishi Ogikubo (西荻窪 三ツ星洋酒堂)

Nakauchi Satoru is a starred chef who has temporarily lost the sense of taste and decides to
quit his job because of it.
After wandering aimlessly for a while, it starts raining and he finds repair under a canopy near
a bar's entrance.

While escorting out the last customers, the bartended Amamiya Ryochiro spots Nakauchi and
recognizes him as a former high school friend and invites him inside.
Once inside, Nakauchi finds out that another high schoolmate, Kobayashi Naoki, is now the owner after his beloved grandfather passed away. Kobayashi is a writer but it has been a while since the last time he sat and wrote something...

Amamiya reveals to Nakauchi that they're both 'taking a break' from their usual life and will run the bar until the last can of canned food is used...yes, the food they serve is all canned and Nakauchi also becomes involved as the bar's chef. Canned food is prepared in order not to lose its flavor so he doesn't have to worry about not being able to taste it.

The bar's customers are of the most disparate types but they all feel like they've reached a point in their lives where they cannot move forward. They've all lost the hope of a brighter future but they'll gain a different perspective thanks to Kobayashi's harsh truths, Amamiya, and Nakauchi's drinks and dishes.

My Opinion👍
I immediately fell in love with the bar's 1920s/30s vibe and the overall retro aura of this series. The protagonists are 3 normal young men at a turning point in their lives and will end up
helping each other and the people who come, mostly without realizing it.

Amamiya and Nakauchi are bright personalities while Kobayashi is a bit more bitter, but
unexpectedly they work really good together.
They have their troubles and worries, but what was first an escape from real life turned out to
be their lifeline.

The customers' stories blend well with the 3 protagonists' ones and since each episode (6 in total) is more or less 20 minutes long, I found it very well directed and easy to follow.
I was genuinely surprised when I found out that the actor playing Amamiya is the same who played Karube in Alice in Borderland...he must like portraying the bartender!
Based on the same name manga series by Sai Asai.
