🎄 Movie Review [Christmas Edition]: Last Christmas

Our protagonist, filled with tons of British humor, Katarina, is a total wreck: her dream job is to be a singer but she's not putting much effort to achieve that dream and is filling her days by working in an all-year Christmas shop in Covent Garden and meaningless one-night stand encounters with strangers.
Since she has a difficult relationship with her mother, Katarina is basically homeless and takes advantage of her good-hearted friend who lets her sleep in her apartment.
One day, she stumbles into Tom, a wide smiling guy, who seems so carefree and happy all the time.
Tom is nice and caring and has this habit of popping out of nowhere exactly when Katarina needs it the most.

During their more or less planned meetings, Katarina will open about the profound scare she had to face the past Christmas and the struggles of going back to a normal life.
With Tom's help and the support Katarina receives from old and new friends, she'll be reminded of how precious life is and how anything is possible at Christmas.

My Opinion👍👎
I started watching the movie because of Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding, I stayed because of the beautifully written story!
I really felt the characters' desire to help Katarina getting her life back on track and it was so relatable as all of them have different ways to show her; maybe her mom's way wasn't what she needed at the moment, but it's undoubtedly done with the best intentions.

I was a bit shocked but not entirely surprised when it was revealed Tom's true identity and I loved how that gave Katarina the decisive kick to set things right with all the important people in her life.
I felt the Christmas spirit in this movie: understanding and helping each other, be there to comfort and shake them when they end up in a slump, and the sense of accomplishment we feel when we do random acts of kindness to people who are in need.

Maybe Katarina and her mom's characters can be a bit extra at times and the Christmas shop Katarina works in is probably one of the tackiest places on Earth but I'd personally visit it every year!
Needless to say, Katarina is a huge of George Michael's and all his songs make the perfect soundtrack for this incredibly nice movie.

It DOES pass the Bechdel-Wallace test
1. There must be at least two women (and the names must be known) ✔
2. The women have to talk to each other
3. The topic of conversation can be about anything except men

Christmas Rating: 5/5
