London, 1958
Jane Broadbent, a 17 years old American girl, arrives in London to live with his father, Lord Jimmy Broadbent, and his second wife, Lady Sheila. The family has yet to completely step out of the airport when they meets Mabel Claremont and her daugher,Clarissa. Mabel is Sheila's distant cousin and reknown gossip queen...well, when she says her daughter is going to make her debute during the upcoming 'London season', Sheila doesn't want to be less and decides, with much of Jane's discontent, to make her debute as well.
And from there, things escalate quickly to hilarious sketches where Sheila tries (in vain) to introduce her step-daughter to eligible bachelors, but Jane becomes unexpectedly interested in a drummer named David Parkson. As it turns out, the young boy has the quite ambiguous reputation of 'ladies man', so Sheila strongly opposes for Jane to hang out with him. Moreover, Sheila has another man in mind for Jane: David Fenner, perfect on paper, but rather boring in reality...plus, Mabel plans to secure David to her own daughter, which will lead to even more funny unexpected plot twists.

This bright and light comedy is just what you need after a stressful week, when you feel nostalgic of the "old good times" or simply when feeling like watching an English set movie that it's not Notting Hill...
My sister insisted we watch this 1958 movies and I must admit I loved every single scene! of it It's witty and cheerful, the costumes are superb and I felt for the true 'victim' of the entire story: the poor, hopeless father, forced to go to several parties just to please his bubbly, yet a bit silly wife.
It's all based upon misunderstandings, wrong interpretations of glazes and gossips. British humour is also featured and at its best, along with an amazingly written script.
Kay Kendall did a splendid job portraying Lady Sheila and she is definitely my favourite character.
