🎬 Movie Review [Halloween Edition]: Tokyo Ghoul S (東京喰種 S)

Since I reviewed the first Tokyo Ghoul for last year's Halloween, I thought to do it again this year with the sequel, Tokyo Ghoul S...If you remember, I really liked the first movie, so keep reading and find out what I think about this second adaptation from the famous manga!
Kaneki Ken seems to have adjusted to his life as half-ghoul/half-human, but he still refuses to eat human meat, which drives his colleague at Anteiku cafè, Kirishima Toka, absolutely crazy!
Still scared of the task force that hunts down ghouls, Kaneki and Kirishima train together to strengthen their fighting abilities but this time the threat comes from one of their own kind...

Tsukiyama Shu is a ghoul, an aesthete, and a food lover: he wanders the streets of Japan's capital, looking for new flavors and delicacies and once he finds what he likes, well...that leads to atrocious and violent deaths.

Tsukiyama becomes instantly obsessed with Kaneki as soon as he steps into the cafè and keeps inviting him out with the excuse of being a book worm as well.
Ignoring Kirishima's warnings about Tsukiyama, Kaneki accepts his invitations, putting himself in a very dangerous situation...

My Opinion👍👎
I was so eager to watch Tokyo Ghoul S ever since I read the news that it was coming out in Japanese theaters in July, last year. Still astonished by the fact that I really and unexpectedly liked the first movie, I had great expectations...unfortunately, this movie hasn't been as good as I hoped.

The overall setting has the underground/dark vibe present in the first movie as well and if you like that kind of aesthetic you won't be disappointed.
The storyline is also interesting, we're talking about supernatural creatures with human features so it may seem odd at first, but once you think about it, it makes sense that even in the ghoul community there are some who want to eat well.

My problem with this movie is the overextended duration of Tsukiyama's eating scenes (I really don't need to see him eating every bloody bite of his meals, seriously, there was no need!) and the acting...while Kubota Masataka (Kaneki Ken) delivers yet another good interpretation and Matsuda Shota (Tsukiyama Shu) channeled the dandy part of his character quite well, the rest of the cast is mediocre: not bad, but not good.

The major problem with the acting here is the credibility of some cruel scenes: the discrepancy between Kaneki screams of pain when he gets some of his bones broken are on a totally different level in confront of everyone else's: there's a person who gets cut into pieces alive and his screams are similar to the ones I deliver when I see a bug!

To be completely honest, I'd still recommend the view but only on Halloween or when you have LITERALLY nothing else left to watch.
It's a pity because I hoped this movie was going to be as good as the first one, but I guess it's the curse of the second chapter in movie series...I didn't like Iron Man II and Mickey Rourke was in it!

I wish you all a safe and fun Halloween,
always in line with the restrictions of these particularly challenging times.

It DOES pass the Bechdel-Wallace test
1. There must be at least two women (and the names must be known) ✔
2. The women have to talk to each other
3. The topic of conversation can be about anything except men
