After the tragic attack that killed all her fellow
soldiers on Christmas day last year, Laurel wants to avoid the holiday as much
as she can...that’s why she rented a cabin in the Smoky Mountains and is planning to stay for 6 months,
all by herself. Well, and Duck, the bomb dog who saved her.
She has just moved in when, thanks to a bear, she meets her 'neighbor' Chace, a kind and smiley author. The encounter makes Laurel having second thoughts about staying alone, but the painful memories of the past Christmas are marked deep within her and it’s difficult to let go the survivor guilt that has been with her ever since the tragic attack.
👍👎My Thoughts
Here's another example of a different Christmas story: the protagonist is a
broken soul, whose faith in what's good and important about this time of the year has faded completely.
I found Laurel's PTSD problems well described, yet I couldn't connect
100% with her, plus I think her and Chace's feelings grown way too quickly.
On the other hand (as an animal lover myself) I appreciated a lot the special bond between Laurel and Duck, her loyal German shepherd; I could sense
the animal's unconditional love by his actions/reactions descriptions and how
much its presence helps Laurel processing her troubles.
This is a book about giving yourself a second chance, thinking in prospective and honoring those who’re gone by living life at its fullest.
My vote: 6¾/10
