2016 in 12 pictures

This 2016 is coming to its end and it has been quite an eventful year: mainly the news was about famous people deads or terroristic attacks, but there have been also joyful and hilarious moments, like the Giant Panda. In this post, I wanted to sum and recap all of those events. Maybe some of them were not the main month's events, but I choose specifically one pic over another because otherwise it would have been way too sad. Ready to relive this year? Enjoy!


January - Ⅰ

David Bowie died on January 10th in New York, after losing his fight to liver cancer. All the world mourned his death with messages of condolences to his family and visiting his home in Brixton, London. Bowie would be the first of a series of singers, actors and celebrities to die this year. 
Also happened:
January, 12th - a kamikaze blew himself in Sultanahmet square, in Istanbul. 10 people died, 8 of which were German turists.
January, 14th - a terroristic attack in a mall in Jakarta, Indonesia. 7 people died.
January, 14th - British actor Alan Rickman (known for portraying Severus Snape in the Harry Potter franchise and other movies such as Love Actually or Sense and Sensibility) died of terminal cancer.
January, 25th - Italian PhD student of Cambridge, Giulio Reggeni, disappears in Egypt. He'll be found dead on February, 3rd.


February - Ⅱ

Leonardo DiCaprio wins the Academy Award for "Best Actor in a Leading Role" for "The Revenant", on February 28th. Social media went crazy and memes went viral. Below you'll find a Fun reaction video from a group of fans!

The Oscar ceremony has been subject of major boycott from the African American actors community due to the lack of diversity among the nominees.
Also happened:
February, 7th - Beyoncé performed at the Super Bowl half time show and wore a Black Panther movement inspired outfit for one perform.
February, 24th - European Union and Turkey made ann agreement to reduce migrant flow into Europe.
February, 29th - American college student Otto Frederick Warmbier get accused by North Korean government of trying of steal a political banner from his hotel in Pyongyang. After his public apologies and his family's request of indulgence, Otto has been sentenced to 15 years of hard labor.

March - 

It's nearly the end of March (22nd) when Brussels became target of two terrorist attacks: the first being attacked is Zaventem Airport and right after a metro station in the city center. 32 people died and 340 people were injured.

Also happened:
March, 6th - Former first lady Nancy Regan died at the age of 94.
March, 18th -  Salad Adbeslam is arrested in Brussels. He was one of the membersin charge of the Paris attacks, back in November 2015.
March, 20th - a bus crashed on the highway in Freginal, Spain. The bus driver admitted he was tired and got sleepy. 13 Erasmus students died, 7 of which were Italian. 8 months later the sentence: not guilty.


April - 

On April, 20th H.M. Queen Elizabeth celebrates her 90th birthday with a series of photos, shot by famous photographer Annie Leibovitz. The most famous is the one with all her grand chidren.

April, 14th - a chimpazee escaped from a zoo in Sendai, Japan and climbed on an electric pole while avoiding its capture.
April, 19th - a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Ecuador. It was the strongest in decades and killed hundreds of people. A photo of a chasm that opened in two a road went global.
April, 21st - American singer Prince is found dead in his recording studio in Minnesota, USA. The autopsy will say that the cause of death is a fentanyl overdose. He was 57 years old.
April, 28th - several strikes almost kneed France. People protested for the current labor's laws reforms.


May -

On May, 6th the city of London has a new mayor: Sadiq Khan, 46, laburist. He's the first Muslim mayor of the British capital.
Also happened:
May, 7th - an huge wildfire spred through Alberta, in Canada. More than 88,000 people were forced to leave their homes.
May, 19th - EgyptAir flight 804 sunk into the Mediterrean Sea, near Egypt's costs. There were 56 people on board, between passengers and crew.


June - 

European Soccer championship took place from the 10th of June to 10th of July. It has been a tournament of first times: Portugal won the Cup for the first time in its history, England' supporters (better say hooligans) destroyed some pubs and shops in Marseilles and other cities. But the main things this EURO 2016 will be remembered for is Iceland's "haka", performed from the soccer team everytime their match was over.

Also happened:
June, 3rd - Boxing legend Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali died at the age of 74. 
June, 3rd - Heavy rain fell over Paris and lifted the Seine river to highest level since 1982
June, 7th - Hilary Clinton is the first woman to win the Democratic presidential nomination.
June, 12th -  Deadly shooting in a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. After killing 49 people, the killer got shot by the police.
June, 23rd - The UK voted for the referendum called Brexit, for the exit from the EU. The people voted YES. Prime Minister Cameron resigns the day after.


July -

On July, 14th a camion broke through the hurdles and got into the Promenade des Anglais, in Nice, France. Run over turists, many of them were families from all over Europe on holiday. The final count is 86 victims and 302 injured. 
An italian grandfather heroically managed to save both his13 y.o. nephew and 18 y.o. niece, but ended up losing his leg.

Also happened:
July, 6th - it's Pokemon Go mania!! Thousands of people downloaded the up and had to walk trying to catch all the little Japanese monsters.
July, 9th - a black girl gets arrested by two white police officers. She was one of the hundred of people who protested against police brutality in front of police department of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The photo went viral.
July, 15th - attempted coup in Turkey. The army took on national television, but president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was in a safe place and survived.



August - 

The 31st edition of the Summer Olympic Games started August, 5th and ended on the 21st, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It has been the first South American city to host an edition of the Games. 
The lowest pointAmerican swimmer Ryan Lochte and 3 other swim team members said they have been robbed at a gas station, when truth was they were drunk and damaged the station themselves. 
The highest point: Chinese diver He Zi got proposed by her boyfriend right after she got down the podium with the silver medal for diving the 3 metre springboard.

Also happened:
August, 24th - a 6.0 magnitude earthqauke devastated central regions of Italy. 299 victims but they could have been more if it wasn't for some heroic gestures by normal people and firefighters.
August, 26th - more than 300 wild reindeer were killed by a lightning stike in Norway.


September - 

It's humanitarian crisis in Syria. All year long has been a succession of bombing the capital Aleppo, but August and September have been the most brutal. The symbol picture is this one of Omran Daqneesh, pulled alive from the rubble of her home.
<strong>August 17:</strong> This still image, taken from a video posted by the Aleppo Media Center, shows a young boy in an ambulance after an airstrike in Aleppo, Syria. It took nearly an hour to dig the boy, <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/17/world/syria-little-boy-airstrike-victim/index.html" target="_blank">identified as Omran Daqneesh,</a> out from the rubble, an activist told CNN. The airstrike destroyed his home, where he lived with his parents and two siblings.

September, 14th - Italian Paralympic athlete Beatrice "Bebe" Vio wins the gold medal in weelcher fencer. 
September, 15th - divorce of the century! Angelina Jolie files for divorce from Brad Pitt for "irreconcilable differences".
September, 26th - Colombian president, Juan Manuel Santos, and rebels' leader, Timochenko, end up an half a century civil war. Thanks to this, Santos won Nobel Peace Prize this year.


October -

On October, 13th is announced that American singer and song writer Bob Dylan has won the Nobel Literature Prize. Congratulations comments are mixed with astonishment ones as well as critics, saying there're more talented and worthy writers than him. He will not attend the awards ceremony in December, due to previous commitments.

Also happened:
October, 3rd - women protested all over the major cities in Poland. The government proposed a law against abortion, even in case of rape and/if the mother was in health hazard. This law has not been validaded.
October, 5th - another flow of migrants from Lybia and Syria led to the dead in the Mediterranean Sea.
October, 19th - In the Philippines, President Rodrigo Duterte did an effective antidrug campaign without precedents. So effective that led to overcrowded prisons.


November - 

On November, 8th the new President of the United States of America has been elected: Donald Trump will be the 45th president, winning over Democratic candidate and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

Also happened:
November, 3rd - Baseball team Chicago Cubs celebrated their 1st ever win of the World Series in 108 years of the club.
November, 20th - people protested the pipeline passing Standing Rock Indian reservation in North Dakota, USA. Celebs likShailene Woodley joined the protested and got arrested for it. Police officers used water cannon in a few occasions. 
November, 25th - Cuban Líder Máximo Fidel Castro died at the age of 90. He has been the living symbol of the Cuban revolution, along with Ernesto "Che" Guevara.


December - 

On December, 19th a camion enters a Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 people, mainly turists. The alleged attacker managed to run away, but his fugue ends 3 days later in Italy, where he gets shot by the police.

Also happened:
December, 19thMevlut Mert Altinta shoots to death Russian ambassador in Turkey Andrey G. Karlov.
December, 25th - British singer George Michael dies in London, at the age of 53, of a suspected overdose.
December, 26th - aereo con coro armata rossa precipita in mare. 92 morti.
December 27th and 28th - Carrie Fisher and her mother, Debbie Reynolds, died within a day from one another. The "Star Wars" actress suffered of a massive heart attack a week earlier her death and didn't survived a cardiac arrest. Her mother, "Singin’ in the Rain" actress, died of a stroke a day after her passing.
